CASEL CARES Initiative

In response to recent challenges in education and surrounding communities, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has launched CASEL CARES, a new initiative that connects the social and emotional learning (SEL) community with experts to address how SEL can be most helpful in response to today’s circumstances. The initiative has included a webinar series on different SEL topics, including the importance of SEL, supporting SEL at home, and resilience.

The Afterschool Leadership Landscape: Supporting and Strengthening Racial Equity

The National Afterschool Association (NAA) has started an initiative to close the racial leadership gap among afterschool programs and the youth they serve and to advance equity in the afterschool field. With its broader strategy to close the leadership gap, NAA is working to build the capacity of leaders of color. One part of this effort is a new report by NAA and Policy Studies Associates. The report identifies a racial leadership gap across the nonprofit sector, including afterschool, and provides recommendations for supporting emerging leaders of color.

Sustaining Passion for the Out-of-School Time Field

A new article in the Journal of Youth Development, “Sustaining Passion: Findings from an Exploratory Study of the OST Program Workforce,” examines results from a survey of 264 out-of-school time (OST) professionals who shared how they felt about their field. Respondents reported that they found value in the relationships they formed with youth and seeing them develop over time, as well as the connections they felt with coworkers and the community. Respondents also said that overall the OST field lacks foundational workforce elements, such as financial stability, a competitive level of pay, and benefits.

Coaching Guide for Expanded Learning Professionals

The National Institute on Out-of-School Time has developed a new coaching guide. The guide covers core coaching competencies: relationships, communication, principles of adult learning, professionalism, and continuous quality improvement. It also outlines effective coaching strategies. The guide can be used by both program leaders to coach their staff and by external consultants.

Promoting College and Career Readiness in Afterschool

Afterschool programs can help students develop the mix of skills they need to be ready for postsecondary education and careers. For those programs that don’t have a college and career readiness program in place, the idea can seem daunting. A blog post from the American Youth Policy Forum lists five ways afterschool programs can promote college and career readiness. It also provides an overview of what this looks like in an afterschool program.

Statistics in Schools

The Statistics in Schools program provides high-quality and free curriculum materials for educators using Census Bureau data. New activities, designed specifically for the 2019–2020 school year, spotlight the 2020 Census and the importance of making sure everyone is counted, especially children. Activities are available for pre-K through 12th grade, English language learners, and adult English as a second language students.

The Science of Learning and Development in Afterschool Systems and Settings

The Science of Learning and Development (SoLD) Alliance explores and strengthens systems and settings that bolster whole-child efforts through research, policy, and practice. A new briefing paper from the American Institutes for Research explores SoLD in afterschool and in other systems and settings where young people learn, live, and play. The brief includes select findings from the SoLD Alliance’s efforts; key takeaways on relational settings, cultural competence, and trauma and adversity; suggestions for supporting high-quality afterschool systems and settings; and an outline of the elements of developmentally rich contexts that foster learning and healthy development.

Volunteers: Engaging, Training, Managing and Retaining (Two-Part Series)

Volunteers can strengthen a 21st CCLC by expanding a program’s offerings, increasing adult-to-student ratios, increasing student access to experts, and more. This two-part webinar series from the U.S. Department of Education’s You for Youth (Y4Y) team shows 21st CCLC professionals how to engage, train, manage, and retain fantastic volunteers in every type of geographic location. Throughout the series, participants hear from experts and program leaders on strategies for maximizing the power of volunteers.

America After 3pm

Demand for afterschool programs has remained strong during COVID-19, with parents seeing programs as providing critical supports. The fourth edition of America After 3PM, an Afterschool Alliance report on parent satisfaction with afterschool programs in 2020, finds that demand for afterschool programs remains high while cost and access barriers to participation and inequities persist. In addition to the report and executive summary, Afterschool Alliance has provided resources like infographics and fact sheets to help afterschool programs share information about the demand, need, and support for afterschool programs.
