The You for Youth afterschool website has a collection of resources on drug and alcohol prevention. All materials provided in the resource list and in the content modules are approved for your professional development needs by both the Office of National Drug Control Policy and by the U.S. Department of Education.

This publication from the Wallace Foundation explores how high-quality arts programs can attract and retain low-income urban tweens. The report draws on hundreds of interviews with young people, their families, leaders of exemplary programs and others nationwide and outlines 10 principles for developing effective programming. An infographic illustrating key findings, a report “knowledge-in-brief,” a video introduction, and video profiles of six outstanding arts organizations offer compelling supplemental reading and viewing.

This report from The Wallace Foundation profiles five schools that are strengthening access to arts education as part of a strategy to expand the school day. The report finds that educators at the schools considered arts to be central to their mission, organized the school day to support arts instruction, and saw the arts as improving student engagement. While the report focuses on schools that have extended the school day, there is also useful information for afterschool practitioners: different approaches to arts education, cross-curricular connections, funding, and how the programs benefit students.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Y4Y portal has added several new civic learning and engagement resources for afterschool practitioners. There are new strategies and information, as well as customizable tools, checklists, worksheets, project examples, and project planners to help practitioners develop civics projects for students. Finally, the website has new trainings-to-go and training starters to help afterschool leaders develop engaging civics professional development sessions for staff.
