Drug and Alcohol Prevention Resources
The You for Youth afterschool website has a collection of resources on drug and alcohol prevention. All materials provided in the resource list and in the content modules are approved for your professional development needs by both the Office of National Drug Control Policy and by the U.S. Department of Education.

Early Warning Confirmed: A Research Update on Third-Grade Reading
This updated report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation underscores the importance of ensuring that children, especially those living in poverty or in impoverished communities, develop proficient reading skills by the end of third grade. The research in the report supports the link between reading deficiencies and broader social consequences, and it shows how low achievement in reading impacts an individual's future earning potential. Experts from Illinois and across the country provide online professional development trainings, webinars, and discussions on topics such as family engagement, literacy, and restorative practices. Free access to this professional networking community is granted to districts, so afterschool programs may need to contact district leadership to explore this resource.

Elements of Program Quality
Created by the New York State Afterschool Network, the online Quality Self-Assessment Tool is organized around 10 essential elements of an effective afterschool program, all of which come from evidenced-based practice: environment and climate, administration and organization, relationships, staffing and professional development, programming and activities, linkages between day and afterschool, youth participation and engagement, parent, family, and community partnerships, program sustainability and growth, and measuring outcomes and evaluation. Each element contains a list of quality indicators that are rated on a performance level from 1 to 4. There are also examples of what a program might look like at each performance level for all indicators.

Emotional Intelligence: How It Interfaces With SEL
In children we know it as SEL or social-emotional learning, and in adults we call it emotional intelligence. As community providers, understanding how to help youth develop their SEL skills can also help develop leadership and emotional intelligence skills later in life. This 13-minute video presentation was produced as part of Margo Herman's Leading with Emotional Intelligence Fellowship Project with the National AfterSchool Association to help afterschool practitioners better understand how Emotional Intelligence interfaces with SEL.
