Gary Comer Youth Center 21st CCLC Promotes Civic Engagement through Afterschool Enrichment
Civic engagement and youth leadership are central to the Gary Comer Youth Center’s mission. To help students develop these important skills and experiences, the 21st CCLC program team works with community partners and also integrates civic engagement into other enrichment activities.

Springfield Urban League 21st CCLC Teaches Dance and Cultural Awareness
To keep high school students involved in the summer, Springfield Urban League 21st CCLC offers a summer camp with a variety of themes planned around student interests. In summer 2019, the program offered Latin music and dance lessons.
Student Civic Engagement in Action
Peoria Public Schools 21st CCLC Student Joins ISBE's Student Advisory Council
Amir Sykes, a junior at Peoria Public Schools’ Manual Academy and a participant in the district’s 21st CCLC program, is one of 21 students on the Illinois State Board of Education’s (ISBE’s) 2019–20 Student Advisory Council.
SEL for Parents
CASEL and Chicago Public Schools have collaborated to create a social and emotional learning (SEL) overview for parents. The video aims to inform parents on SEL in schools and provide them with insights on SEL in their own parenting practices in order to support their children's social and emotional know-how. The video is available in English and Spanish.
Trauma-Informed Care Training
Are you familiar with the signs of childhood trauma, or the impact it can have on lifelong learning, engaging and even health? What is the role of a 21st CCLC practitioner in the life of a child experiencing trauma? The U.S. Department of Education’s You for Youth (Y4Y) web portal for 21st CCLC programs has a new “Click & Go” training module on trauma-informed care. The training provides background, insights and strategies for helping those students who need your compassion the most.

The fiscal year 2020 After School Programs Non-School District grant is now open to applicants. View the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)/ Request for Proposals (RFP) for fiscal year 2020. Proposals are due to ISBE no later than 12 p.m. Jan 27, 2020. Please contact Connie Denney at cdenney@isbe.net questions.
The Illinois Arts Council Agency and ISBE are pleased to announce funding is available for school districts and other eligible applicants for the Arts and Foreign Language Planning Assistance Grant. This grant is intended to assist with measuring the effectiveness of a school or school district’s existing arts education or foreign language program, identify areas for improvement, and establish a realistic timeline and budget for improving arts education or foreign language instruction. The deadline to submit proposals is January 13. Award decisions will be announced in April 2020. Learn more on the Illinois Arts Council Agency website.
